Terms of Service

Last updated 25 October 2026.

These terms are an agreement between you and Lake Hopkins of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, who operates Chickatrice ("we", "us"). They cover the Chickatrice Cockatrice server at mtg.chickatrice.net, this website at chickatrice.net, and the account you use for both (together, "the Service").

By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.

About the Service

Chickatrice is a free, community-run server for Cockatrice, a program for playing card games online. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Cockatrice project, Wizards of the Coast, or any card game publisher. Magic: The Gathering and the names and images of its cards are the property of Wizards of the Coast LLC.

We provide the Service free of charge, as a hobby. We don't sell anything through it.

Who can use the Service

  • You must be at least 13 years old.
  • If you are under 18, you must have the permission of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms on your behalf.
  • You must not use the Service if we have banned you, unless we have lifted the ban.

Your account

  • You're responsible for what happens on your account. Keep your password private and use one you don't use elsewhere.
  • Your username must not be offensive, impersonate another person or staff, or be chosen to mislead. We may rename or remove accounts whose names break this rule.
  • If you sign in with another service, such as Discord or Google, that service's own terms also apply to how you use it.
  • Tell us as soon as you can if you think someone else has used your account.

Rules of conduct

When using the Service, you must not:

  • Harass, threaten, bully or abuse other players, or use abusive, hateful or discriminatory language;
  • Cheat, including by exploiting bugs, colluding, or using tools that give you an unfair advantage;
  • Spam, advertise, or flood chat or games;
  • Share another person's private information without their consent;
  • Post or share content that is illegal, sexually explicit, or that infringes someone else's rights;
  • Impersonate staff or another person;
  • Create accounts to get around a ban, mute or other restriction;
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts or our systems, or to disrupt or overload them;
  • Run bots or automated clients without our permission; or
  • Otherwise abuse the Service, such as by misusing its features or the report system, or using it in a way that harms other players or the Service.

Staff may also give reasonable directions to keep games and chat fair and friendly, and you must follow them.

Moderation

If you break these terms, our staff may, depending on how serious the breach is, warn you, remove content, restrict your account, or ban your account or IP address, temporarily or permanently. We may also act without a prior warning where a breach is serious or puts other people at risk. Bans take effect the next time you connect.

Where we can, we'll give a reason. If you think a decision was wrong, contact us using the details below and we'll review it.

To report a player, use the report feature in Cockatrice or contact us. Content that may be illegal or seriously harmful can also be reported to the eSafety Commissioner.

Your content

You keep ownership of what you create and upload, such as decks, avatars and chat messages. You give us a free, non-exclusive licence to store, copy and display that content as needed to run the Service, for example to show your avatar to other players or keep replays of games you played. This licence ends when the content is deleted, except for copies we keep as described in our Privacy Policy.

You must only upload content you have the right to share. We may remove content that breaks these terms.

Availability of the Service

We run the Service on a best-effort basis. It may be unavailable, slow, or lose data at times, for example during maintenance or after a fault, and features may change. We recommend keeping your own copies of decks you care about.

We may stop providing the Service at any time. If we plan to shut it down, we'll give reasonable notice on this website where we can.

Ending your account

You can stop using the Service at any time, for any reason, and can delete your account from your account page.

In the same way, we may suspend, ban or close your account at any time, at our discretion, including where we reasonably believe you have broken these terms or abused the Service, and also for any other reason or none. The Service is free and nobody is entitled to an account, so we don't have to give a reason, though we'll usually try to. You can still contact us to ask us to reconsider.

Australian Consumer Law

Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy, or any guarantee, warranty or other term or condition, implied or imposed by any legislation that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited.

Liability

Subject to the section above, and to the extent permitted by law:

  • The Service is provided "as is", and we make no promises about it beyond those the law requires;
  • We are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the Service; and
  • We are not responsible for what other players say or do, though we will act on reports as described above.

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for loss caused by our fraud, or by our negligence where that liability can't lawfully be limited.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time, for example to reflect changes to the Service or the law. We'll post the new version here with a new date, and for significant changes we'll give notice on this website before they take effect. If you don't agree to the changes, you can stop using the Service and delete your account. If you keep using it after the changes take effect, the new terms apply.

General

  • These terms are governed by the laws of Tasmania, Australia. You and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Tasmania and the courts that can hear appeals from them.
  • If any part of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, it will be read down or severed to the extent necessary, and the rest of the terms will continue to apply.
  • If we don't enforce a part of these terms straight away, we can still enforce it later.
  • These terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.
